violence Characters can die from many ways (beheadings, neck slashing, burns, melted gold spilled on a man's head, stab wounds, minor gashes, rape, massacres, face smashing, etc). Even major characters that you won't suspect of dying has a big chance of getting killed. George R. R. Martin intended for this, he has stated that he wanted his book series to be realistic and unsuspecting. The violence in this series is brutal, realistic and sometimes gory. But, it is usually over quickly and is not lingered on for too long. Violence is still a strong presence on the show, however. A main criticism of the show are the rape scenes that seem "tacked on", and are not in the books that this show is based on. Beheadings are shown (head falling into basket / rolling away). Jousting has been present in the show, with bloody results. Battle scenes are normally bloody. A numerous amount of soldiers get graphically stabbed by swords and spears, with blood spewing from throats and other body parts. There are numerous grisly and gory images that will be upsetting to some viewers. Some disturbing scenes of torture. (Especially in Season 3 and 4) In one episode a horse is decapitated and another horse has its throat slit for a ritual, which may be especially upsetting for animal lovers. There is some violence against frail, young women and children, which might be one of the most upsetting aspects of the show. In one episode, a knight starts beating a helpless young girl at the order of the king. In another episode a helpless young boy gets his throat impaled. Episode 1.01 Winter is Coming Many decapitated bodies and limbs are seen arranged is a pattern. A man is beheaded with his head being held in one hand and the body falling to the ground. The head is tossed to another person with blood dripping out of the neck. A deer is seen with its stomach cut open and its guts spilling out. A small boy is pushed out of a window of a tall tower and is seen falling down. Episode 1.02 The Kingsroad An assassin attempts to kill a little boy, but is seen by a woman and they brawl. The man is killed by a wolf ripping his throat out. Episode 1.06 A Golden Crown, a man has melted gold poured over him. He screams and gags in pain. His corpse later falls to the ground. Quick but really graphic scene. Episode 1.09 Baelor, a man is beheaded for a false accusation of treason. The actual execution isn't seen, but in the beginning of the next episode Fire and Blood, it shows the sword that beheaded the man and it is covered in blood. Then you see the man's head, while his body is dragged off the execution site. Afterwards, the man's daughter is forced to witness her father's (the man who was executed) head on a spike outside the castle, she is crying and is in great emotional pain. She is then struck by a guard twice. Episode 2.01 The North Remembers, by the order of King Joffrey (son of King Robert), all the bastard children from King Robert are murdered by soldiers. A young prostitute's crying baby is grabbed from her arms and stabbed (it pans to the woman's face and the sound of stabbing is heard). The woman is in tears and is screaming. Another bastard boy of about the age of 5 is drowned. Babies are seen being grabbed and dragged by soldiers. Episode 2.04 Garden of Bones, several scenes of disturbing violence, such as a man being tortured by having a rat forcefully claw into his stomach, a leg being amputated, and a prostitute being forced to beat another at the order of King Joffrey. None of the violence is graphically detailed, but it is psychologically disturbing. Episode 2.06 The Old Gods and the New a citizen throws a cow pie at the king and the king orders his soldiers to kill everyone who was in the city square. In one part of the scene, citizens rip a priest's arm off and tosses it into a crowd. This scene shows a plethora of blood, soldiers killing citizens, an attempt to rape an innocent teenage girl, etc. Episode 2.09 Blackwater features a very intense, violent battle scene in which many men are killed. profanity Strong language throughout almost every episode, used in both the derogatory and literal senses. The strongest word used is "c*nt", which is generally used once every two episodes or so, but there are some occasions where it is said more than once, such as 208 "The Prince of Winterfell" which has six uses, 404 "Oathkeeper" with five, and 510 "Mother's Mercy" with multiple shouted uses in one scene. F*ck, c*ck, c*nt, p*ssy, sh*t, wh*re are very common Bastard is used extremely commonly however always in the literal term (illegitimate child). It is a term of shame and is sometimes used to insult people.
alcohol Wine is consumed in almost every episode, particularly during feasts and gatherings. It is implied that some characters drink for the sole purpose to get drunk. It is quite a big feature of the show and often influences character behavior. "Milk of the Poppy" used as a painkiller.
frightening Well liked major and minor characters are sometimes unexpectedly (and sometimes brutally) killed. A lot of fights and brawls occur throughout the course of the show. In the very first episode, a young boy climbs a tower and high up in the tower, he witnesses a man thrusting into his sister in the behind. The sister sees the boy watching with fear and confusion. The man grabs the boy, talks to him for a little bit, then pushes the boy out the window, hoping the fall will kill him. The boy survives, but is left paralyzed. The show includes more than a few instances of sexual violence predominately (but not always)towards women - one major male character is gelded, another major character already a eunuch describes how he became that way when very young (shortly before taking revenge upon his aggressor whom he had spent years searching for.) There are occasional scenes showing "white walkers", man-like monsters that live in the ice and seemingly have bodies made of the same, intense blue eyes, grimacing faces and scrawny bodies that might scare younger viewers In Season 1 Episode 1 there is a scene at the beginning, where a character wanders of into the forest away from his companions, and finds decapitated humans arranged in a pattern. He and his companions are later attacked by a human-like creature with a sword. Quite a mysterious and confronting scene. There is a scene in season two, episode "Garden of Bones", where a woman gives birth to a dark, shadowy creature. The scene takes place inside a dark cage, and later the creature kills King Renly Many viewers will find season three very disturbing in the fact that a major character from season two is tortured by a psychopath. Afterwards the nature and identity of the character being tortured is forcefully changed from psychological torture, and is enslaved by the torturer. Worthy of its own note is the episode "The Rains of Castamere", (commonly referred to as "The Red Wedding"); in what starts as a happy wedding with all parties seemingly fully at peace three major almost universally well liked characters (by other characters and audience alike) are unexpectedly violently murdered during the after wedding banquet - the killing scene is long and detailed. The second episode of the fourth season "The Lion and The Rose" features the death of King Joffrey; he is poisoned during [yet another] wedding feast. Again the death scene is long and detailed (coughing up blood as his face turns pale blue, bloody liquid oozes from his nose and eyes). Although though long loathed by so many (again characters and audience alike) that in this case this death was to a large extent long expected, the length and detail of the death scene may likely still disturb some viewers. The episode "Breaker of Chains" has attracted much criticism for the inferred act of a man raping his sister next to their dead son's body. (No sex/nudity was shown.) The episode "Oathkeeper" contains a scene where white walkers take a baby to a ceremonial area where a one of the white walkers touches the baby turning it's eyes bright blue - seemingly making it into another white walker; the episode ends with heart wrenching sounds of a baby crying during the closing credits. In Season 5 "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" a very intense rape scene takes place where a teenage girl is raped in front of her friend. An extremely intense scene, meaning to create hate for particular characters. In "The Dance Of Dragons", a little girl is burned at the stake. We don't see her burn on screen, but we do hear her agonizing screams and terrified pleas for help. In "Mother's Mercy" Little girls are whipped by a man with a stick. Their agonized screams are heard as they collapse on the floor. The man is later killed in a slow and tortuous way. Official agency certifications below.
